Branding Cows

We had no plans for today.  We were just going to take it easy and maybe go and buy some flowers and veggies to plant in the garden and around the yard.  Tyke woke up early and came into our room to inform us that he wanted to go do chores with Bampa Terry.  The poor kid completely missed out on any chores yesterday because of our mixed up schedules with work, etc.  He was seriously upset with us yesterday that he never got to move the sprinklers or feed the cows (this is now a M-F job for him in the mornings and he loves it and we love that he loves it!).  So I handed Tyke the phone and told him to call Bampa and see if he had done the chores yet.  I dialed Bampa and Tyke did all of the talking.  Bampa Terry hadn't done chores yet and was in fact going to be gathering all of the cows so they could brand them.  He said he was starting in a half an hour so come out and get to work.  We all hurried to get ready and headed straight out!

Normally this isn't something I would have gone to do but I love watching our boys enjoys things like this.  Our little family of four herded a few of the cows that had escaped to the south.  It was some bumpy riding but the boys absolutely loved it!  Tyke rode in the back of Bampa's side-by-side while Luke, me and Daddy rode in the front.  Tyke thought he was so awesome!  He had his cute little leather work gloves on, was holding some tools and sitting in the back by himself hollering at the cows to get them to move.  Luke thought it was super excited whenever the cows would run in front of us and we "pushed" them over to the feed yard.  He would throw his arms in the air and scream in delight.  Both boys had permanent grins on their faces the entire time.

By the time we were finished rounding up the cows and getting the branded and vaccinated and sprayed for lice there were about twenty-three of us Kay family members that randomly showed up!  Grams and Gramps send money down to buy us all lunch at Subway for working so hard.  When we walked into Subway everyone asked if we were having a family reunion or something, we filled that place.  All in all it turned out to be a very good, long day and we're so glad we got to participate!

Chad and I are so proud of our little boys and the love they have for the great outdoors and work.  We feel blessed that they (right now mainly Tyke but Luke will be joining in on the chores soon enough) have the opportunity to learn the farm life and to learn what it means to work hard and to take care of things.  They are such good little boys and Bampa's and Daddy's right hand men.  I have no doubt that they are going to grow to be good hard working men thanks to the opportunities they are being given now and for that I can't thank Grandma Gaye and Grandpa Wally enough! (and my dad too!)  They bought this land up and bought the farm equipment and cattle so that their kids would have something to do other than to get in trouble and their legacy just keeps going on!  Bampa Terry is so awesome to take these little boys with him and teach them what they need to know.  Daddy works with Tyke and Luke too to be good helpers and work hard.  They are in good hands, that's for sure!

We can't wait to help move the cows out west Memorial weekend!  The boys will enjoy that more than anything I'm sure!  Gotta love the country life!
