Crappy Croup, Again!

Well Tyke has been struck by the dreaded croup again!  It's so scary how fast it comes on.  On Saturday (12/13), Aunt Stephanie babysat the boys while Chad and I went to his work Christmas party.  Everyone was fine and well.  Sunday morning Bowdee woke up with what sounded like the croup and as time progressed, sure enough, it was.  Stephanie called to let us know and we kept a close eye on the boys hoping that they wouldn't catch.  Unfortunately Tyke did.

Tyke started out sounding like he had caught Chad's cold (which has been lingering for a couple of weeks now!) and by midday we were thinking he sounded a bit raspy.  I called Aunt Rachelle to see if I could borrow her nebulizer (Stephanie had taken her nebulizer back for Bowdee and we had medicines left over from Tyke's bout with croup back in July) but poor Trayson was battling something similar to croup too and was having to have breathing treatments as well.  Luckily we were able to borrow it for one treatment and then Rachelle came and took it back.

After giving Tyke his breathing treatment, which he took really well compared to past treatments, his breathing and cough sounded worse.  Around 7:30 p.m. I called up to his pediatricians office to see if we could get in on a late night appointment, trying to avoid the emergency room that we've visited way too much this past year.  We were able to get an 8:00 p.m. appointment with Dr. Fullmer so we headed right up!

Sure enough, Tyke was diagnosed with croup!  Dr. Fullmer checked him over and said that his lungs and ears were clear and perfect but he definitely had croup.  Tyke was given an oral dose of steroid and we were given another dose of that steroid to give him 24 hours later, the next day.  Dr. Fullmer assured us that after the second dose of steroid Tyke would be feeling a lot better.  We were told to try and do our best to keep Tyke and Luke separated because if Luke catches the croup it will be bad news!  So Luke and I have been sleeping in the living room the past couple of nights and Tyke and Chad have stayed in the bedroom with the doors closed and two humidifiers running constantly.

On Thursday Tyke still sounded miserable but a little bit better.  That night around 8:30 p.m. we gave him his second dose of steroids.  By Friday night his barking cough was gone but he had a full blown cold in it's place.  Today he's doing much better and sounding much better but we're battling a runny, stuffy nose and a mucus filled sounding cough.  I can't wait for this sickness to be gone from our house!
