Our poor little guy! After being so miserable on Thursday, Friday was looking to be a little better. Chad had the day off and he and Tyke just hung out at home and played. Tyke still wasn't feeling the best but he was definitely doing better than the day before. His barking cough was mostly gone, he had just a congested sounding cough. As the day went on, Tyke started to worsen. His temperature had been allover but it spiked to 102.9 that night. His breathing also seemed uneasy. He was breathing shallow and fast. We gave him a dose of Motrin and then stuck him into a vapor baby wash filled bubble bath to calm and cool him. He enjoyed his bath time at first but then he started to look exhausted. After ten or so minutes we noticed his little lips started turning a bit blue and he started shivering a little. We immediately got him out and warmed him up. He was still fevering but in the 101.4 range. It had been an hour since his temp measured 102.9 and we felt that we had done everything we could to help him. We finally loaded up and headed to the emergency room.
It was nearly 10 p.m. when we pulled in. Tyke was tired and miserable and just wanted to be held. We walked into the E.R. and I let them know that our poor little guy was having a hard time breathing and was running a fever. They immediately took us back and called the doctor. Our nurse was awesome! She was so sweet with Tyke, but sweet as she was he was having none of it. He officially hates everything doctor, whether it's good or not. Our nurse weighed Tyke (22 pounds even) took his temperature (100.4) and she also tried to get his blood pressure. First by putting the cuff around his calf, and then eventually putting it on his arm. He cried the saddest cry the entire time, even though he wasn't being poked or prodded. His blood pressure was 99/88.
Dr. Besendorfer was the on call doctor. I was relieved to know that we would be dealing with a great doctor. He checked Tyke over and Tyke cried the entire time. Tyke's lungs, once again, were crystal clear. His throat looked great and the doctor only found a little bit of wax deep in Tyke's ears. He was at a loss with what was wrong with our little guy. Dr. Besendorfer suggested running some labs and doing a chest x-ray, we agreed to both.
Poor Tyke was fevering and breathing hard and was just plain miserable and tired. I held him close to try and get him to relax and rest. He had fallen asleep when the lab tech came in to pick on him. As soon as I layed him on the table his eyes popped open scared. I held onto his upper body, Chad held onto his lower body, one nurse held his upper arm while another held his hand all so the lab tech could poke him and draw blood. Tyke scrame his head off! As soon as the blood draw was done I picked Tyke up and got him calmed down, just in time for the lab tech to stick a cotton swab clear up his nose to test for RSV. Again he scrame, and again it took a few minutes to calm him down.
He had just fallen asleep, again, when the x-ray tech came in to get him. We walked down to the x-ray room and as soon as we entered Tyke started crying the saddest heartbroken cry ever. Chad and a nurse took Tyke and held him while the x-rays were done. It took two tries to get the side view because Tyke was hysterical at that point. After we got back to our E.R. room we turned off the lights and let Tyke sleep. He was so restless and still trying to catch his breath from crying so hard. Poor little guy!
Tyke had been asleep about 30 minutes when the doctor came in with the results. Everything looked perfect. No RSV, blood work was great and chest x-ray was clear (as far as he could tell, the radiologist still needed to take a look). The doctor was baffled with what was going on. He suggested Tyke get a shot of steroid because it was more condensed than taking it orally, and do breathing treatments. Tyke was not happy at all when he got poked in the leg. After that he almost refused to fall to sleep because I'm sure he thought it was a trick. The respiratory therapist hooked us up with breathing treatment medicine and tubes and we were sent on our way. Tyke was still running a fever but his breathing had mostly calmed down.
Saturday morning I had planned to get up and run out to Aunt Stephanie's to get her nebulizer (saving us some $$) Things changed when our poor little guy coughed so hard he threw up all over us both and the bed. We bathed him and I called Stephanie to tell her I would be a while getting cleaned up and ready. She was nice enough to deliver it to us. She gave us a lesson on how to use it, visited for a few minutes and left. We got Tyke's medicine mixed and the breathing treatment started. He hated every second of it! He ended up having three treatments that day total. We kept him dosed with Tylenol and Motrin, rotating every three hours so he constantly had something in his system. His fever never really went away and would randomly spike here and there.
Sunday morning Tyke woke up around 5:30 am screaming! He had a fever of 103.4, his highest yet. We hurried and gave him some medicine (which at this point was a major fight) and stuck him in the tub. We waited until around 7 a.m. and gave Uncle Trenton a phone call asking if he would please come and give Tyke a blessing? He was more than happy to and he and Bishop Peterson (from their ward) showed up around 7:45 a.m. Tyke was very hesitant around them and burst out crying as soon as Bishop Peterson anointed him. I got him calmed down and he looked up at Uncle Trenton and the bishop and shook his head no. Trenton then gave Tyke a great blessing! Tyke cried the entire time. When finished, Uncle Trenton told Tyke to get better and Tyke shook his head no at him again. We all laughed and the guys went on their way. Within three to four hours Tyke's fever was completely gone! For the first time since Thursday morning. Tyke had a great day Sunday! He didn't fever at all after the blessing. His cough sounded really congested and his nose was a battle to keep clean but for the most part he felt great!
This morning Tyke woke up again with a fever of 102.9. We did the usual routine: Tylenol and a bath, and that seemed to help a lot. We're not sure what's going on? We're glad that all of Tyke's test results have come back negative, but frustrated because we have no answers. A couple of my sisters have suggested maybe he's getting teeth on top of having the croup. I really hope that's all it is, but I'm getting tired of our poor baby boy being so miserable. We feel so mean and so helpless. All we can really do is give him his Tylenol or Motrin and baths. Get feeling better bud!!!
Poor kid, hope he gets better soon! I don't know if you do this or not but you can overlap tylenol and ibuprofen so that his fever doesn't spike. My son Boston ran super high fevers in his first year, so I had to do that often, so I thought I'd share that if you weren't aware of being able to do that. Good luck and I hope the poor kid gets feeling better! He is such a cute little guy
