For Tyke's birthday I had made arrangements to get his 1 year pictures done at Camera Shy. I figured it would work best on his birthday so I wouldn't have to purchase any extra balloons or make cake again. While I was baking cakes for his party I made an extra and decorated it for his pictures.
I left work early and picked Tyke up from Aunt Jenny's. We headed to Payson and picked Daddy up from work and headed north to Lehi. Tyke was scheduled for a cake smash photo session at 5:30 p.m. He slept the entire time on the drive up. I was glad because that meant a happy Tyke, or so I thought. Instead we had one upset, grumpy, non cooperative little guy. He cried nearly the entire time! At first it was cute but then it started getting a little frustrating, for all of us. The gals at Camera Shy were so good to try and make Tyke happy. They teased him and blew bubbles and played with a squeaky toy but Tyke refused to stop crying and smile. We finally handed him his little cup of Cheetos snacks and like a switch he stopped crying. He stuffed his face with those Cheetos and threw a fit when the cup was empty. At that point, and after three wardrobe changes and a trip outside, we decided to do the cake smash and call it quits. We stripped Tyke down to his blue jeans and placed him in front of his cake. The tears stopped and he turned really serious. I helped him stick his hands in the cake so that he knew it was OK to touch. After that he was loving life. He wasn't totally sure about the cake and spit the first couple of bites out but eventually chowed down on it. We still couldn't get a smile out of the little stinker. Our photographer finally called it quits and when we pulled Tyke away from his cake to clean him up he really threw a tantrum!
After cleaning him up and calming him down, which was no easy task, we left Camera Shy and headed across the street to Costco for groceries for the big party. We were quick in there, in and out, because we had to be back at Camera Shy by 7 p.m. Chad and Tyke waited in the car while I went into get our pictures. I had to wait about 15 minutes before they were ready. I was so upset and worried that there wouldn't be any good pictures since he had cried practically the whole time. I was pleasantly surprised, and my heart melted, as we went through the pictures. Sure he was crying in them, and serious, but our photographer captured our baby boys personality perfectly! I am so in love with his pictures!!
After getting our pictures we headed out to dinner at the Texas Roadhouse. Chad was in charge of Tyke's birthday dinner and that's where they decided to go. We were taken straight back to a booth thanks to Chad calling ahead of time for us. Tyke was a little concerned because it was so loud and dark in the restaurant (one of the down sides to Texas Roadhouse). I informed our fun (and obnoxious) waitress that we were celebrating Tyke's first birthday! She took good care of him and kept getting down to his eye level and talking to him. He never cracked a smile and looked at her like she was crazy. She brought him his very own chocolate milk, which he loved but never finished because I wouldn't let him hold it so he threw a fit. He was just in one of those moods! He ate a roll and most of Chad's mashed potatoes. Everything else we tried to give him he tossed on the floor. When we were finished with dinner our waitress and her gang came over with a bowl of ice cream covered in chocolate syrup for Tyke! He was pretty excited at the site of it but then they pulled out the saddle and we sat him on it while everyone gave him a big "yeehaw!" (Texas Roadhouse tradition). Our waitress hollered loudly that it was Tyke's first birthday and got our side of the restaurant to yell. Tyke wasn't very amused and stayed looking serious and concerned. As soon as he got to dig into his birthday ice cream he was one happy camper.
Even though Tyke was a grump last night I know he had a great day! Happy Birthday Roni!! We love you!
I made this little collage of facts for Tyke for his first birthday. There are so many more things I could have written down if I had had the time and the room.
