2 Month Check Up

Tyke had his 2 month check up today with Dr. Fullmer.  We are just 3 days shy of Tyke being 2 months old (already?!!!)  I was so sad to have to take Tyke to the doctor for shots today because he was in such a good happy mood and full of smiles.  I told him where we were going and what was going to happen (because he can understand me you know? =)) and we got loaded up and headed for Payson to go pick up Chad and go to the doctor.
We got checked in and while waiting for our turn Chad decided he'd get Tyke out of his car seat.  About 5 minutes later Tyke had a nice little blowout.  I guess that was his way of letting us know what he thought about this visit to the doctors office =)

We got taken back to room 12 and I stripped Tyke down to his diaper to get weighed in (I hurried and changed him while at it).  Our boy has grown like crazy since his last visit!  Tyke weighed in at a whopping 11.8 pounds (34th percentile), his height measured 23.9 inches (90th percentile) and his head measured 16.2 inches (96th percentile).  His head measurement had us all second guessing.  According to his records his head measurement jumped from the 4th percentile last visit to the 96th percentile this visit which is pretty unusual.  The nurse couldn't believe it and thought maybe she had measured wrong, so she measured again and got the same reading.  The doctor found it odd too so he did a third measurement and got the same reading as well.  We're thinking that at the last visit the nurse measured wrong.

Dr. Fullmer checked Tyke over and let us know that our little guy is perfect! (but we already knew that)  Everything checked out great which we were excited to hear.  We had a few concerns to talk about with the doctor which turned out to be nothing.  We're just paranoid, over-protective first time parents but it's good to know he's healthy and it's better to be safe than sorry =)

After getting checked over and having a good discussion about immunizations, Dr. Fullmer left the room and a nurse came in to give Tyke his shots.  Poor little guy ended up with 3 shots and one oral.  The nurse gave him the oral immunization first and he really liked it (of course he did, it was sugary and he's our sugar baby).  After that I gave him his binky and she poked him in the leg.  He tensed up and got the most confused look on his little face and then cried for 5 seconds and was fine.  Then came round 2.  He looked at me like what the heck and cried really bad.  We got him calmed down, which was just so mean because we knew a third poke was coming, and according to the nurse it would burn/hurt the worst.  Poke #3 really did him in and it took a while to get him calmed down.  It was so sad but a relief to have done.
Our tough guy! =)

We got our little guy calmed down and headed out to the car.  I fed him, got him buckled up, and then we ran a few errands, dropped Chad back off at work and headed home.  Tyke slept the entire time and when we got home he slept a little longer too.  He kept waking up and would just smile at me with sleepy eyes and then go out again.  I was happy to see he was still happy and not hurting and all without pain medicine.  That didn't last long though.  His eyes popped wide open and without warning he started freaking out!  I couldn't calm him down for nothing!

Tyke cried and cried and cried for a good hour or so.  I tried everything I could think of to calm him down.  I tried to feed him, didn't work.  I tried giving him his binky, didn't work.  I ran a warm bath for him and fought with him for a good ten minutes to sit down and relax, didn't work.  I got him out and diapered and wrapped him up in a blanket.  Luckily Chad came home when he did because at that point I was in tears too.  I felt so bad that Tyke was hurting and I couldn't fix it.

Chad took Tyke and tried to calm him down without success too.  We had Tylenol on hand but I had figured that as bad as Tyke was crying there was no way I could get him to take it.  I got a dose ready (I only gave him half the recommended dose because I'm scared like that) and we attempted to give it to him.  Tyke drank it right up and calmed down and fell to sleep within 5 minutes.  Of course he took the Tylenol well, it's sweet flavored I'm sure.  He napped really well in my arms but kept randomly crying out in pain in his sleep.

He woke up after about an hour.  I fed him and then changed him and tried to massage his little legs.  His left leg he was OK with, his right leg was really swollen and he would cry out in pain if I barely touched it, let alone massage it.  Tyke felt a little warm so we took his temperature and he did have a little fever of 99.5, nothing to worry about yet.  We let him lay on his blanket, in just a diaper, and kick his little legs and talk to us.
Around 7:40 p.m. we were able to give Tyke another (1/2) dose of Tylenol.  He didn't take it so well that go around and actually ended up throwing up twice.  I got a little more medicine and gave him and he took it OK.  He dozed off and we hurried and ate dinner and got ready for bed.  I really wanted to give Tyke another warm bath (especially since he had thrown up and his cheek was sticky from the medicine) but I didn't want to bother him, he was sleeping so good.  His little eyes popped open around 9 p.m. and he seemed pretty content so I went and bathed him.  I think he enjoyed having a warm washcloth on his legs.  He let me massage them a little but still got mad at me for touching his right leg.

Tyke is currently sleeping well and in another 45 minutes I'll be giving him more Tylenol if needed.  Here's hoping for a good night, but I'm not so sure it will happen.  Poor little guy!
