Rough Day

Poor Tyke's little hematoma's on his head have grown bigger in size.  On Wednesday afternoon I called the pediatricians office because the bump on his right side had grown to the size of an egg and was going down the back of his head.  I was curious if we should be concerned or if it was normal.  The nurse talked to the doctor and called me back to tell me that as long as he was still eating, sleeping and pooping normal that all was well, but if his bumps got any bigger to bring him in to be checked out.

Chad and I watched Tyke closely for a couple of days.  He's been eating like a champ and he's definitely dirtying a lot of diapers.  Saturday night we had a long fussy night.  He didn't sleep too well and wanted to eat and eat and eat until I couldn't keep up anymore and finally had to fix him a bottle.
Sunday morning we noticed that his bump on the left side had grown quite a bit and was now tear drop shaped, moving towards his eyebrow.  Chad and I decided it was time to get him to the doctor and find out what the heck was going on.

We were able to take him to the doctor at 1 p.m.  Dr. Fullmer checked him over really well and said that he's perfect in every way except for those darn bumps.  Tyke-man has even gained almost a full pound in a week, which surprised us all!  His bumps definitely should be going down not growing.  Dr. Fullmer said he didn't think it was anything to really be worried about but he wanted to rule out everything just as a precaution.  He sent us up to Timpanogos hospital to get blood work done (to make sure Tyke's blood was clotting like it should) and an ultrasound on his head to make sure the blood was sitting between his skull and skin.  Anything under the skull could be bad.  We could have had all testing done in Payson, but Timp is a little more experienced in the whole process and we want what's best for our little guy.

Dr. Fullmer called in the orders to Timp and we headed that way.  We checked in through the emergency room and after answering a lot of insurance questions we were taken back to radiology.  The people at Timp were so nice and fast.  Tyke slept through his ultrasound.  He didn't even flinch when the gal poured gel on his head.  She spent about 20 minutes checking everything out (none of it made any sense to us) and then she left the room to go and talk with her doctor and our doctor.  We hung out in the room while she was gone and had ourselves a nice little nap.  She came back in about a half an hour later and led us to the lab to get Tyke's blood drawn.
The lab was closed (it was Sunday after all) so she took us back to the e.r. where we waited about 10 minutes before being taken into a kid friendly room.  A nurse came in to take Tyke's blood and he did not like it all.  Chad and I were both holding him down while the nurse tried to collect blood from his poor little hand.  After trying and fighting with him she gave up and informed us that unfortunately she'd have to poke him again because she needed a lot more blood than she had got.

We loved on our little man and got him calmed down just to lay him back down and start over again.  The second go around there were 2 nurses and they poked him in his arm.  Again he freaked out but they were able to get what they needed.  I was a mess, I cried right along with my baby.  It was so sad to see him hurt and scream and know that I couldn't pick him up just yet.  I hugged him tight when we were done and he fell right to sleep in my arms.

While all of this was going on Chad received a call from Dr. Fullmer.  The ultrasound had shown that there was in fact blood underneath the skull which caused enough concern that he wanted to have a ct scan done as well.  After hearing this news I really cried.

I prayed the entire time we were walking down the hall to go and get his ct scan done.  The tech that did the ct scan was awesome.  We layed Tyke down on the machine and the tech stuck pillows on both sides of his head so he couldn't wiggle, and then taped him down.  He gave Chad a gown to wear so he could stay in the room with Tyke, and he made me go behind the wall with him while he ran the test.  Tyke slept through the entire thing.  It was interesting seeing his little horns on the images the ct scan picked up.  It was a quick test and we were taken back to a small waiting room to wait for word from the doctor.

The ct scan tech eventually came out and said that Dr. Fullmer had looked the images over and everything looked great, we had nothing to worry about and could go home.  THANK GOD!!!!  I've never felt so relieved in my life.

It's crazy how this little guy has totally taken over our lives so fast.  We love him so much and are so thankful that he's ours!
