17 Months Old

The Lu is 17 months old now and is growing like a weed!  This kid is getting so tall and solid, just like his brother.

Luke has been loving the warm spring weather we've been having.  He loves his new found freedom of playing outside.  He gets so angry with us when it's time to go in the house or get in the car for a ride.  He just wants to play.  When he's outside he's the happiest and it makes for a good day.  His whole attitude changes for the day if he gets some outside play time in.  It's been nice, for all of us, to have less temper tantrums (there are still plenty but he's definitely more mellow after being outside).

Luke has got such a fun, goofy little personality.  If he makes someone laugh he picks up on it quickly and continues to do what he was doing to be funny.  He LOVES spinning around in circles and it makes for some good entertainment.  He will spin, not very gracefully, about four times before stopping and watching the ground still spin.  Then he looks up at us and giggles and if we laugh he spins some more.  Sometimes we have to make ourselves stop laughing so that he will stop spinning.  There's no forcing him to stop because he's one very determined, stubborn little man.  If the laughs stop so does he.  He's a great entertainer, when he wants to be.

One thing about Luke, he's his own little person and he lets us know that!  There is no forcing him to do something.  No convincing him or reasoning.  He's stubborn and determined and we're learning to just go with the flow!

Luke hasn't learned any new words this past month, which kind of bugs me since we were told by our pediatrician that he should be learning 2-3 words per month.  He communicates fairly well.  He's starting to point at things that he wants or needs.  He will point and grunt, all while holding a binky in between his teeth, and usually gets what he wants.  He waves hi and bye and will say both but not on command.  I can never get him to say something when I want him to.  He screams "Daaaaddddd!" a lot!  He occasionally says mom, mum, or ma.  Sometimes we think he says Tyke but we're not really sure.  He definitely understands the words Tyke and brother because when we ask him "where's Tyke?" or "where's brother?" he will look at Tyke and point at him and smile.  He understands us well and can follow simple commands.  I will tell him to go to the bathtub after meals and he runs right to the tub and tries to climb in.  I will tell him to take an item to his daddy and he will.  Sometimes he needs more convincing than others but he does a good job.  He's getting to be a good little helper.

Luke is all boy and is a rough kid!  He likes to hit, pull hair, occasionally bite, wrestle, push and scream.  If he spots anyone lying on the floor it's game on and he immediately runs over to them and starts a wrestling match.  He likes to play rough and thinks it's great!  He likes to pick on his big brother, which for now is mostly okay because we consider it payback for all of the times Tyke picked on him.  He especially likes to bother Tyke when he's napping on the couch.  Luke will poke him and push him (he gets in trouble for these times) until Tyke screams in his sleep and starts swatting at him.  We try to stop him but he keeps going back for more.  I guess he sees it as an easy target when Tyke can't hit or push back.  These boys are going to give us a run for our money!

Luke still loves his bath time and it is the happiest part of his day.  He loves to splash and play with his bath toys.  He bathes with his big brother and they love to pick on each other.  Tyke tries to hog up most of the bath tub and Luke in return dumps cups of water on Tyke's head, which he hates but the rest of us thinks it's funny.  I love the relationship and bond that Luke and Tyke have with each other!

Luke loves his minky blankets more now than ever before.  He drags them everywhere and I feel like I'm constantly throwing them in the washer to keep them clean and not stinky.  He likes to find the corners on his blankets now and chew on them.  It's pretty darn cute to watch him do so.

Luke has been venturing out in the food department and he is still our little champion eater!  He still likes everything we have fed him minus mashed potatoes eggo waffles.  He is obsessed with mandarin oranges and has to have a cup of them every afternoon for a late afternoon snack.  We introduced him to Vienna sausages and he LOVES them!  He will eat any kind of meat put in front of him with out being picky.  He likes his milk warmed up.  He hates waiting for it to be warmed up but he still refuses to drink it cold.  He's not a big fan of having it flavored with chocolate.  He likes apple juice but is unsure of orange juice.  He loves pop but we try not to let him drink it.  I think his infatuation with pop is getting to drink out of a straw.  He likes straws a lot!  Give the kid a straw and he will be content until it gets taken away.  I'm pretty sure he's tired of grilled cheese sandwiches.  We make them a lot because it's about the only thing his big brother will eat.  Give the Lu some meat and cheese and he will be happy as can be!  We love that he loves food and is such a good, "adventurous" eater.  We wish his brother would take a lesson or two from him.

Luke had been cutting back on using his binky but the last week or so he has started using it almost 24/7.  While I don't like that and would love to be rid of the binky, it is definitely a lifesaver when he is in one of his moods and we can't calm him down.  He definitely finds comfort in his binky and blanket.  He has been sleeping better at night and wakes up early in the night, like around 1 am for milk, if he wakes up at all.  He sleeps through the night at least twice a week now which has been so nice!  He usually will wake up and come running into our room and then gets mad for some milk.  His screams in the middle of the night are so loud they wake us all up and probably the neighbors too.  The boy has got a set of lungs and knows how to use them!  I don't know how his throat doesn't get sore the way he screams!  Luke is down to 1-2 bottles a day.  One at bedtime and one during the night if needed.  Other than that he uses a sippy cup now.  He's not completely sold on that idea but we're trying to win this fight.  Occasionally we give in and give him a bottle in the afternoon for nap time just because he gets so grumpy and we know it's a quick easy fix (if we're lucky).  Luke does well with a sippy cup.  He usually prefers to steal Tyke's and use it rather than his own.  He's not a big fan of chocolate milk but will drink it.  He drinks most anything that he can get his hands on.  He likes to help me with my diet coke's which I don't like because I don't want him liking pop and I don't want to share.  He gets mad though and it's just not worth the fight.

Luke continues to LOVE food!  (I wish we could say the same for his brother.  I wish Tyke would take a lesson or two on eating from Luke.)  Luke has been introduced to a few new things this past month and has loved them all.  We started giving him chopped up vienna sausages with his mandarin oranges and I think it's safe to say that they are his new favorite treat!  Luke loves any kind of meat and will usually quickly eat it first before eating what else is on his plate.  Luke also had his first taste of salsa the other night.  We had dinner at the local Mexican restaurant and he stuck his finger in the salsa.  I told him he wouldn't like it because it was extra hot that night (plus salsa is a pretty extreme food for young ones anyway).  Well he sucked his finger clean and didn't pull a disgusted face or anything before diving back in.  Soon I was dipping chips, lightly, into the salsa and giving them to him and he really enjoyed it!  I was so surprised!  I tried my hardest to not let him have too much because I was worried about him getting a belly ache.  He really enjoyed his "meal" at the restaurant and it was the best that he's ever eaten when in public!  He had half of a quesadilla, hands full of my rice (he takes care of himself and helped himself to my plate), chips and salsa, and quite a few bites of my chicken enchiladas.  He loved it all!  He's such a great little eater!  He enjoys pretty much anything he can physically grab onto, so things like mashed potatoes are on the dislike list.

Our little guy isn't so little anymore and is getting to be so tall and solid.  If he stands next to me he hits me at about the waist which I feel like is tall for a 17 month old.  He is currently wearing 18-24 month/2t shirts, 12-18 month jeans, and 18 month jammies which are pretty much too small for him now and need to be retired.  He is still in a size 4 diaper but as soon as we run, in the next day or two, we are going to be moving him into size 5's.  He wears a size 6 shoe that fits great length wise but seems to be a little too tight in the width/height wise.  He has chubby little feet with a high arch.  Luke still only has twelve teeth: top and bottom front 8 and 4 molars.  As grumpy and miserable as he is sometimes I would swear that he's teething but I can't find any signs of new teeth coming in yet.  He loves having his teeth brushed, mostly just so he can bite the toothbrush but he does cooperate well with getting the job done.  The little stinker bites me every time I try to look in his mouth and I must say he has got one good, strong bite!  It surprises me that he doesn't draw blood, just tears haha.

We love our little big guy so much!  He's been so much fun to watch learn and grow this past month.  It just keeps getting better and we really hope that with that he starts sleeping better and being less grumpy.  I know I make it sound like he's just a miserable little grump.  He's really not but it sure feels like he's more grumpy than happy at times.  He's a playful, tough, strong, determined little man and we love him and his sweet, stubborn self so much!  Happy 17 months Little Lu!

Lu was NOT happy to have his monthly photoshoot today!  This kid is getting harder and harder to get a quick shot of.  He hates to sit still and just wants to hold the camera.  Silly Lu!

Spring Weather

FINALLY we have been receiving some nice, spring weather!  We took a little walk tonight over to the local park and enjoyed playing on the playground.  Of course Luke had to have his blanket dragging behind him and Tyke stayed quite a ways ahead of us the entire walk (run for him).  That kid does not listen and tried to dart out into the roads more than once.  I'm not sure how Chad and I are going to keep up with him in the future, we barely can now.  Time to get his backpack leash out again...

Tyke loved it and tried out everything.  Luke hated the swings but liked sitting on the spinning toys.  He didn't really play, just hung out.  Tyke enjoyed throwing the wood chips and getting in trouble for it.  Luke tried bullying a little boy just bigger than himself and got slapped in the forehead by him.  It didn't really phase him at all and the other little boy got in trouble with his mom.  After playing for a while we went and walked some more before heading home.  It was such a perfect evening and we sure enjoyed it!  Hurray for spring!

Boys!

So last night I hurried to bath Luke after dinner.  We had company and he wanted to play with them but he was covered in a thick layer of tater tot casserole (it's like a ritual for him to smear food all over himself before devouring it).  Luke usually gets excited for bath time but he was super upset with me for whisking him away from our company to clean him up.  I planned on a quick rinse off but good enough that I wouldn't have to dunk him again.  I ran the bath water and discovered it was too hot, after I had already taken off Luke's diaper.  So while I was trying to get the temperature right, Luke tried escaping the bathroom, naked.  Instead of escaping he ended up accidentally shutting the door, trapping himself inside.  Score for me!  He was throwing a mega fit and wanted out but couldn't now.  He turned towards me in his fit of rage and started peeing all over the floor!  I didn't notice any of this, I had my back turned to the door.  I turned around to grab him and put him in the tub and found him peeing, all over his hand!  He was waving his hand back and forth in the his stream of pee, trying to catch it but instead was splashing it all over the cupboards and floor!  All I could do was laugh at him.  I put him in the tub, cleaned up his mess, and then cleaned him up quickly and got back to our company.  Gotta love little boys!

Grumpy Lu

We are seriously at a loss of what to do with the Lu?  He can be such a good, happy little guy but the tiniest little things set him off and when he's mad, look out!  We are having the hardest time trying to figure out what he wants/needs.  He will stand right next to me and scream the most blood curdling scream ever, head thrown back with tears and snot and all.  He is so loud that you can hear him clear across the house!  I pick him up to calm him down and he screams louder and bucks and kicks and throws his entire body back.  Like he wants to be picked up but don't touch him at the same time.  I immediately put him back down so that I don't drop him instead.  It's hard to hold on to that wild little man!  He's fed, has a clean diaper, has his binky and blanket and still chooses to just be mad.  I have gotten pretty good at ignoring him when he's in these moods.  They seem to be getting more frequent though and are starting to wear on me now.  I sometimes wonder if he's not feeling well, like maybe an ear infections or something.  I've taken him to the doctor twice for this before just to find out that he's fine, just grumpy.  Now I'm wondering if he might be having growing pains?  I don't know.  All I know is I wish he would calm down a little bit.  Sometimes when Daddy picks him up he will calm down, like flipping a switch off. He's spoiled I suppose. I really think that that is all it is. How do we cure that?!  He's definitely giving us a run for our money!  Dr. Fullmer wasn't kidding when he told us that he heard child number two is always worse, haha.

Eighty-Five

Today the Kay family got together to celebrate Grandpa Wally turning eighty-five years old!  It was such a good time and we all had fun visiting with one another.  Gramps was happy about his party and really enjoyed himself.  He later told Grams (who told me later tonight) that this was the first real birthday party he had ever had thrown for him.  We estimated there were eighty-five of us family members there, plus a few extras.  We had a yummy lunch of Subway sandwiches, salads, taco soup and white chili.  It's always a good time when the Kay family gets together.  Happy Birthday Gramps!  We love you!

Bath Time Fun

These little monkeys absolutely LOVE bath time!  They love everything about it except for getting out....and soap.  They hate soap.

Provo City Center Temple Open House

We had the opportunity to go to the Provo City Center Temple open house tonight!  We weren't sure if we would get the chance to make it to this one or not because tickets were so hard to get a hold of and the times available weren't ideal.  Luckily Aunt Jenny was able to snag some for a 9 p.m. session (ick!) and after a lot of debating we decided to go ahead and go.  I'm so glad we did!  This temple was absolutely beautiful!  I think it may be my new favorite.  The boys were fairly good during the tour.  Tyke held onto cousin Quade's hand for a good portion of the tour but then got restless and tried to ditch us.  Luke wanted nothing to do with any of us so he was super grumpy being packed around the temple.  They really were pretty good inside the building considering how they had acted while waiting in the long lines in the underground parking garage to even get in.  It was a perfect night and we're so glad we were able to go, even if it did mess with the boys (all three of them) bedtime.  Thanks for inviting us Aunt Jenny!

Little Lu and Little Birds

I love this picture of Luke watching the little birds come in for some dinner at Grandma Gaye and Grandpa Wally's house.  He is so shy around Grams and Gramps and kept his distance from them on Saturday when we were out and about delivering valentine treats.  Once Grandma showed him the little birds flying and hopping around he warmed right up and kept his nose to the window watching them.  He thought it was pretty neat and we thought it was pretty cute how much he enjoyed it!

Baby Cow

While out passing out the boys valentines last night we decided to stop at the feed yard and help Bampa Terry feed the cows.  He quickly noticed that there was a mamma cow in labor that needed help.  She was having a hard time getting her calf out and needed to have him pulled.  Grampa Terry rushed home to change clothes and make a few phone calls for some help.  We drove the car over to where the mama cow was so that the boys and I could watch without getting super dirty (it was very muddy plus with all of the hay and manure I didn't want to get out and get into all of that).  Uncle Drew and cousin Dustin quickly showed up and the boys (Bampa, Drew, Dustin and Daddy) got busy moving the mama cow over into her own pen.  She was not very happy about that and really put up a fight.  The guys were finally able to rope her and get her tied up to the fence so that they could help her.  It didn't take Dustin long to get the baby cow out.  Tyke and I watched with excitement, while Luke watched cartoons.  It was, embarrassingly enough, the first time I had ever seen such a thing.  It was neat to watch and that baby cow was so cute.

Tyke was very excited to have watched and has been concerned about the mama cow and baby cow all day today.  We road out to Mona for a while and had to make a detour stop to check on them.  The baby cow was getting a drink of milk and that got Tyke's attention.  We explained to him the best we could (in three year old terms) what was going on.  He was just happy as can be to see those two cows!  We tried to find Bampa so that Tyke could report to him.  He kept telling us, "I need doe tell Bampa he no need to pull baby tao any moe!" (I need to go tell grandpa he doesn't need to pull the baby cow anymore) but he wasn't home.

I love that my boys are getting in on all of these fun farm things so young.  I hope that they grow to really love it and learn a lot from the men in our family!  I know that they are going to be such hard workers as they grow up.  They have great examples in their Daddy and Grandpa and all of the other men in our families.  I'm so thankful for that!

Tired Boy

This was a first for Luke.  He never just crashes, he always puts up a fight when it comes time for naps or bedtime.  He was so tired today but refused to give in.  Tyke was in his bed napping and Luke was bored with how quiet it was in the house.  He came up to me with his blanket and I tried to cuddle him and help him take a nap but he was having none of it.  He sat with me for maybe two minutes and then grabbed his blanket, hopped off of the couch and headed into the kitchen.  I could hear him moving around the bar stools (one of his favorite, most annoying things to do) and then the sounds stopped after about five minutes.  I thought maybe he was being sneaky and was playing with something he shouldn't be.  Instead I found him like this...fast asleep underneath the kitchen table, bar stool still in hand.  It was so stinking cute!  I let him lay like that for a good ten minutes or so and then I couldn't resist and had to pick him up and move him to the couch where he would be more comfortable and he enjoyed a good long nap!

Learning

I just have to note how big and helpful Tyke has gotten this past month.  He helps me out so much and is starting to take on more and more chores (taking garbage to the trash, putting dirty dishes in the sink, picking up toys, attempting to make his bed, undressing himself for bath time, helping Daddy move/split firewood, and the list goes on...).  He is seriously getting so big and so helpful and it brings tears to my eyes to think about how proud I am of him and Luke.  They are our whole world!  I am so proud of each new thing that they learn!  Tyke's newest accomplishment is putting his gym shoes on all by himself!  To see him light up when he gets them on right makes me so happy for him.  He, for the longest time, has said to me "I tan't!" when I have asked him to put his shoes on.  He can get his boots on no problem but not his gym shoes.  Well with a little training from mom, dad, Grandma Cheryl and cousin Trayson he can finally do so!  As of yesterday Tyke can now put on his own gym shoes and his jacket all by himself and he is the proudest little three year old you've ever seen!  It's great having him be able to do little things for himself now.  Way to go buddy!  We love you and are so proud of you, always!

Messy Lu

Luke has a new favorite food and he refuses to have help when eating it...macaroni and cheese!  He loves it and scarfs it down quickly but not before rubbing it all over his belly, in his hair, and tossing some on the floor too.  He's a messy boy but a great eater and we sure get a kick out of watching him devour his foods.  Messy Lu!

16 Months Old

Little Lu is sixteen months old today!  He's almost a year and a half now and boy does he keep us on our toes.  He's a pretty high maintenance little guy.  He wants to be held a lot but at the same time doesn't want to be touched.  He's tricky to make happy.

This cute little boy is kind of sassy for his young age.  He is always snooping or getting into trouble and when we get after him he gives us an innocent look and exclaims, "What?!"  He is starting to learn new words now and it's so funny to listen to him and hear when he chooses to use them.  He can say:
  • "Wha!" (what)
  • "Bah" (bye)
  • "Eeeeze" (cheese for the camera, if he so chooses to smile for us)
  • "Moo"
Mr. Lu has taken up karate too or so it seems.  I'm pretty sure he learned it from Tyke but he comes running after us with one arm in the air and then swings down while exclaiming, "hi-ya!"  He then giggles and runs off, turning around almost immediately to come back and karate chop us again.  It's one of the cutest things I've ever seen.

Luke is getting so big and solid.  Height wise he hits me at about my hips.  He's a solid little guy and is getting heavy to pack around.  He likes to be held but only if he's upright and can see what's going on in the world.  He's so long and heavy that it's awkward to hold him any other way unless sitting down.  I pretty much can't hold him like a baby anymore because he's just too big.  Not that he would let me anyway, haha.  Luke is in a toddler bed now and it's a battle every night to keep him in his bed and get him to sleep.  He loves his new found freedom and tries to get out of bed constantly until I finally win.  He's a persistent little thing!

Luke has really started to show a big interest in playing with toys now.  He and Tyke have a blast in their room getting everything out and playing.  They almost always have the door shut and entertain themselves for a good while.  It's nice for Chad and I to actually have two seconds of quiet time to ourselves.  Luke loves playing with trucks and will get down on his hands and knees and push them around while making truck sounds.  It's so stinking cute!  He also loves playing with the toy rifle and shotgun, Paw Patrol pups, and trains.

Luke is still a binky and blanket baby.  We can't go anywhere without the two or we are in real trouble.  He packs his blanket everywhere, tossed over his shoulder and dragging on the ground.  He has tripped on it a few times but refuses to leave it behind.  He reminds me of the Charlie Brown character Linus.  He has just recently started throwing his blankets over his head and walking around the house blindly.  He thinks that it's pretty cool but I get nervous that he's going to walk into something and get hurt.  He's such a goofball!

Luke's new tricks for the month include opening closet doors, mainly the pantry door, and climbing on anything and everything.  He's fearless!  He loves getting into the pantry and making messes.  Luckily we haven't had anything too major yet.  He also likes climbing things like up onto the couch and then up onto the back of it so he can get in trouble for banging the blinds against the windows.  He's always in the blinds and thinks it's so funny.  He has learned from Tyke how to jump on his bed.  He climbs up on his bed, throws the pillows and blankets on the ground, grabs onto the rail and jumps like crazy.  It's pretty cute but I worry he'll lose his balance and fall off or something.  Live and learn right?

Luke loves his food.  Every day when I get home from work he gets pretty grumpy and we have a hard time getting things right for him.  Almost every time all that it takes is opening up the pantry and letting him choose an afternoon treat.  Every single time he goes for the little fruit cups.  Luke LOVES mandarin oranges and they are his preferred fruit.  He tolerates peaches and pears but mandarin oranges get scarfed right down.  Luke continues to be a good little eater for us and eats pretty much everything we put in front of him.  I've noticed he's not a big fan of foods like mashed potatoes or cottage cheese or anything that can't be grabbed with his little fingers.  He likes to eat with his hands.  He likes to have a fork or spoon handy but pretty much to just play with it and not use it.  He LOVES meat of any kind as long as it's diced up for him and will tear apart grilled cheese sandwiches and cheese quesadillas so that they are bite size for him.  He's just a good eater and we wish his big brother would take some lessons from him.

Luke has outgrown all of his 12 months clothing and is currently in 18 month jeans and 18 month to 24 month/2t shirts.  He's in a size 6 shoe with room to grow but he hates to wear them because they're too height.  I think his feet are too fat and his arches too high for his shoes to fit comfortably.  I need to figure something else out for him in the width department.  Luke is in a size 4 diaper still.  We used size 5's for a few days (because we had ran completely out of 4's, oops) and decided they were still a bit too big for him.  He still hates and puts up a fight for getting his diapers changed and getting dressed.  He still hates lotion and everything about getting out of the tub and ready for bed.  He loves getting his teeth brushed and that's about all.  He's a handful for sure!

We love our little Lu so much!  He's just too cute and so much fun to watch play and learn.  Happy 16 months Bubba!

Valentine Pics

I signed the boys up for a Valentine's mini shoot with a photographer from Payson.  I was so excited!  I love her work and her set up for pictures was so cute and the price was cheap(ish).  My boys looked so handsome and were in a pretty good mood until we walked into the photographers house.  Tyke immediately tensed up and hid behind my back and whined that he wanted to go home.  I told him as soon as we were done here we could do whatever he wanted.  There were other kids in the house waiting their turn for pictures and posing so good and cooperating so great.  I made the boys watch so they would have an idea of what to do.  Well, when it came time for Tyke and Luke it was a disaster.  As soon as I sat Luke down so I could wrestle Tyke he started freaking out and cried hysterically, the entire shoot.  Tyke absolutely refused to have his picture taken and was such a brat.  He kept hiding from us and was being super sassy.  The photographer tried bribing him with fruit snacks but he quickly threw them back at her (so embarrassing!).  I tried bribing him with money and the only success I had with that was him getting close enough to me that I could grab him and sit him down by his hysterical brother.  He immediately bolted and ran into the front room and hid under a table.  It was a awful!  These are the only three pictures we got.  I love them but dang it boys!  I would have loved some of them smiling or even just being good.  I can't believe how naughty Tyke acted!  I expected Luke to act like he did.  Once we left the house the boys were happy as can be and giggling and I cried.  I guess I'm going to have to dust off my nice camera and start doing pictures myself.  Little stinkers!!

Pantry Boy

This little guy has found a new trick and he thinks it's pretty awesome!  He can open and close the pantry door all by himself now!  For the most part it hasn't been a very big problem.  He's a snoop and has fun rummaging through my baking supplies.  I suppose I should place the opened flour and powdered sugar bags on a higher shelf...  Luke has made a few fun messes since learning this new trick.  He dumped out a bag of mini marshmallows the other day.  Both he and Tyke thought that was pretty cool and had fun eating them all as they picked them up.  I can't keep Luke out of the pantry so I guess it's time to rearrange things in there so he only has access to kid friendly items.
