The boys had their well check visits with Dr. Fullmer today! I thought it would be so much easier to schedule them together this time, since the timing worked out so great, but that wasn't so. Talk about a chaotic handful these two boys were! They were so noisy and naughty during our visit with Dr. Fullmer. I suppose things could have been worse but seriously, Tyke kept picking on Luke making him cry, and both boys kept climbing up on the chairs and licking the windows!!! Tyke even ripped off a good chunk of one of their vinyl pictures on the wall! I was so embarrassed! I felt like I concentrated more on trying to make them behave than listening to the doctor. These boys don't usually act like this so I'm not sure what their deal was today. Naughty boys!
Our appointment was scheduled for 4:30 this afternoon and we pretty much got called right back after getting checked in. Daddy and Luke went into our room where they and nurse #1 worked to get Luke's stats. He was NOT happy to be stripped down to his diaper and measured! He didn't want anything to do with any of it. Once he was done though he was happy as can be and ran around the room in just his diaper, pulling out all of the toys to play with.
Luke's 15 month stats:
Weight: 27 pounds 8 ounces (95%)
Height: 33 inches (95%)
Head: 18.75 inches (71%)
Tyke and I got stopped out in the hall by nurse #2 (I feel really bad that I can't remember their names? They are the nicest gals ever and we've been dealing with them for three years now and I'm clueless. My bad!). Tyke usually doesn't cooperate with hopping on the scale so I was worried that he would be the same way today but he did so great! He hopped right up on the scale and left the buttons alone while he watched the numbers light up. While standing on the scale the nurse put the little oxygen monitor on his finger. He usually freaks out about that too but calmly watched the flashing red lights. I was so proud of him! After he stepped off of the scale the nurse took his blood pressure (his first time ever) and then we measured his height. He was so cooperative with it all that it surprised me big time!
Tyke's 3 year old stats:
Weight: 38.6 pounds (95%)
Height: 39.4 inches (90%)
Once we were done in the hallway we met up with Daddy and Lu in our room. Luke was perfectly content until big brother came him and then the "fun" began. Tyke can't stand to leave Luke alone if he's content and has to bully him. It drives me crazy! Nurse #2 got Tyke's attention and had him sit in one of the kiddie chairs and handed him a board to hold that showed four shapes. She told him she had a game for him to play and then went on to quiz him on the shapes. This was to test his eye sight mostly. She would point to a shape on her board and then have him find that same shape on his board. He did great and it was the cutest thing ever! After a couple of rounds of this she walked across the room and held her board up and started pointing at shapes again, this time though they were farther away and smaller. Tyke struggled with this a little bit but I guarantee it had nothing to do with his eye sight and everything to do with his concentration and not really being ready for a quiz. After the testing was done the nurse left us and the real fun began. Tyke terrorized Luke and they were both so loud and Daddy and I were both so frustrated because we really tried hard to get them to quiet down and be respectful and DON'T FIGHT!!!
We discussed a lot of things with Dr. Fullmer about the boys. We talked about Tyke and him being a picky eater and being stubborn about potty training. We were reassured that we're on the right track and to keep doing what we're doing until things click. We are going to stop giving Tyke whole milk and cut back to 2% now that he's three years old and obviously high on the charts for his weight (he's not overweight or anything, just solid). We are going to go with the flow on the potty training thing and just keep reminding him and motivating him until he shows a real interest and then we will really go for it! Also, we got the okay from Dr. Fullmer that it's okay if we end up sending Tyke to bed without dinner because he won't eat for us. It makes us feel so bad to do so but with the doctors approval I feel a little better about it. He said it should only take a couple/few times of doing so before Tyke realizes that we're serious and he caves. We'll see how that one goes! Tyke will go back for either a 4 year or 5 year old well check.
Luke will stay on whole milk and we will work with him on learning new words and staying a good eater. He is supposed to learn 2-3 new words a month at this point. Our poor little guy had to get two shots today (usually it's just one shot for the two vaccines but the supply across the country is low, so he had to get poked twice). He was really upset about that but he did a pretty good job and calmed right down once I handed him a water bottle. Luke goes back at 18 months for his next well check.
After our visit the boys got to pick out a sticker but Tyke was disappointed in the selection and he let the receptionists know so they hurried and scrambled to find him a good one in their backup stash. He got monster truck stickers and was pretty excited about that!
All in all it was a great visit even if it did feel exhausting and we're so glad that the boys got another clean bill of health! Way to go boys!!! We decided next time we will make separate appointments so that we can enjoy our visit instead of having it feel like complete chaos.
